Microsoft Research is looking for highly motivated PhD students with experience in optics to join us in a new and exciting project involving Holography and Head Mounted Displays. The ideal candidate should be able to work independently on this challenging and interesting project. Fondness towards engineering and innovation is essential. For the successful candidate, this post will be an excellent opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge and improve their career prospects. The project is a very ambitious (but at the same time sensible) attempt to solve the key issues of nowadays HMDs including resolution, field of view and form factor. It involves solving a range of practical challenges with its core being a holographic projection system. More information about the project can be found here (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/project/holographic-near-eye-displays-virtual-augmented-reality/ ).

    Advanced (Lower)

Essential skill for this position is:
• hands on experience with free-space optical experiments and ability to working independently with lasers in a darkroom.

Desirable but not essential skills include:
• Experimental experience with digital diffractive optics including SLMs and DOE’s
• Proficiency with computer generated hologram (CGH) design algorithms like 3D polygon-based algorithm and Gerchberg-Saxton.
• Experience with Holographic Optical Element (HOE) fabrication and good theoretical understanding of the relevant theory (e.g. as described by Kogelnik)
• Experience with lab control systems

Internships usually last 13 weeks, are paid, and Microsoft will cover part of the travel expenses. There is no closing deadline for this post.
